Poly chemical tanks installed at an Australian chemical plant
Storing liquid fertiliser or chemicals? Learn why water tanks won’t do the job and what to look for in a proper poly chemical tank.
There’s a mistake we’ve seen more than once in our 40+ years in the tank business. Someone needs to store liquid fertiliser or a cleaning chemical, they have a spare water tank sitting in the shed, and they think: that’ll do the job.
It won’t. Purpose-built poly chemical tanks exist for good reason — and those reasons matter for your safety, your budget, and the life of the tank itself.
The Water Tank Factory has supplied poly chemical tanks to water treatment plants, chemical factories, council depots, commercial laundries, mining operations and working farms across Australia. This guide covers what makes a chemical tank different from a water tank, what to look for when buying one, and the questions worth asking before you commit.

What is a chemical storage tank?

A chemical storage tank is a purpose-built vessel designed to safely hold liquids other than water — such as liquid fertilisers, agricultural chemicals, cleaning agents, and process liquids. Unlike standard water tanks, chemical tanks are made from specially formulated, chemical-resistant polyethylene, with heavier-duty construction and fittings matched to the liquid being stored.
That last point is the key. The tank must suit the chemical, not the other way around.

Why can’t you store chemicals in a standard water tank?

The short answer: weight and compatibility.
First, weight. Water tanks are engineered around the density of water. Many liquid fertilisers and industrial chemicals are far denser — some weigh 30 to 50 per cent more per litre than water. Fill a standard water tank with a heavy liquid and you’re loading the walls beyond what they were designed to carry. Over time, that leads to bulging, stress cracking, and eventually failure. This is why the density of your liquid — known in the industry as its specific gravity (SG) — is one of the first things we’ll ask about.
For a closer look at how density changes the way a tank is actually manufactured, see our post on why chemical storage starts with a conversation.
Second, compatibility. Chemical-grade polyethylene resists an enormous range of substances — from liquid fertilisers and glycols through to acids, alkalis and sanitising agents. However, not every chemical suits every tank specification. Concentrations, storage temperatures, and chemical combinations all affect how a tank performs over its life.
This is exactly why we ask for a Safety Data Sheet before quoting any chemical storage application — we’ve explained how that SDS review process works in detail separately. Tell us what you’re storing, and we’ll confirm the right tank for the job.

What can you store in a poly chemical tank?

Purpose-built poly chemical tanks suit a broad range of liquids used across Australian farms and businesses:

  • Liquid fertilisers — one of the fastest-growing storage needs on Australian farms, as more operations buy in bulk to control input costs
  • Agricultural chemicals — crop inputs and farm chemicals, subject to compatibility checks
  • AdBlue — now part of the routine on most operations running modern diesel machinery, with [its own storage requirements worth understanding → /adblue-storage-on-the-farm/]
  • Cleaning and sanitising agents — for commercial laundries, hospitals, workshops and food processing
  • Process and treatment liquids — for manufacturing, water treatment and industrial operations

Every liquid has its own requirements. Before recommending a tank, we’ll always ask what you’re storing, at what concentration, and where the tank will sit.

What should you look for in a chemical storage tank?

Five things separate a tank that lasts from a tank that becomes a problem:
1. Chemical-grade polyethylene, certified to Australian standards. Look for tanks certified to AS/NZS 4766, the Australian standard for polyethylene storage tanks, from a manufacturer with audited quality systems. Our tanks are certified to AS/NZS 4766:2006, and the manufacturing plant is audited annually to ISO 9001:2015.
2. Construction matched to your liquid’s density. Confirm the tank is rated for the densest liquid you plan to store. If in doubt, rate up — it gives you flexibility later.
3. Chemical-compatible fittings. The tank wall is only part of the system. Outlets, seals and valves must also resist the chemical being stored. Standard water tank fittings often won’t.
4. Australian manufacturing you can check up on. A chemical tank is infrastructure, so buy from a business that will still be here in twenty years. Our tanks come from the same Australian family operation that’s been making poly tanks since 1984 — over 250,000 of them — with a 5-year commercial warranty on the chemical range and an engineered life of 20 to 30 years or more.
5. The right size and shape for your site. Chemical tanks aren’t one-size-fits-all. The range comes in both round and slimline designs, from compact sizes through to 22,700 litres — and tanks can be engineered to suit specific chemicals and applications.

Where should a chemical tank be installed?

Placement affects both safety and compliance. As a starting point, position chemical tanks on a stable, level base away from waterways, drains and dams. Keep them accessible for filling and dispensing, but separated from vehicle traffic. Shade extends the life of any stored chemical.
Depending on your state, the chemical, and the volume stored, you may also have containment (bunding) and signage obligations. If your site requires bunding, our SmartBund™ self-bunded range solves it without the cost of a concrete bund — but requirements vary between jurisdictions, so check with your state’s environmental or work safety regulator for the rules that apply to your site.
Our team can point you in the right direction when you call.

Why does buying direct make a difference?

Because nobody knows a tank like the people who built it. When you deal with The Water Tank Factory, you’re talking to the team behind the tank — the same team that reviews your SDS and specifies the fittings, outlet and shot weight before manufacturing begins. And if your requirement is unusual, we can engineer a solution: once your quotation is accepted, drawings are prepared for your approval before production begins.
We’ve supported Australian farms and businesses with their storage needs for more than four decades. Whatever you need to store, the conversation starts the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a normal water tank to store liquid fertiliser?
No. Liquid fertilisers are denser than water and will overload a standard water tank’s walls, leading to cracking and failure. Always use a purpose-built chemical tank rated for the liquid you’re storing.

What is specific gravity (SG) and why does it matter?
Specific gravity measures a liquid’s density compared to water, which has an SG of 1.0. Many liquid fertilisers sit between 1.3 and 1.5 — meaning up to 50% more weight pressing on the tank walls. Your tank must be built for the densest liquid you plan to store.
Are poly tanks chemical resistant?
Chemical-grade polyethylene resists a very wide range of agricultural and industrial substances, from fertilisers and glycols to many acids and alkalis. Compatibility still depends on the specific chemical and concentration, so always confirm before purchase.
How long do poly chemical tanks last?
A quality poly chemical tank, certified to AS/NZS 4766 and used within its ratings, is engineered to last 20 to 30 years or more. Our chemical tanks include a 5-year commercial warranty.
Do I need council approval or bunding for a chemical tank?
It depends on your state, the chemical type, and the volume stored. Some installations require secondary containment or signage — that’s where a self-bunded tank can save serious money on installation. Check with your state regulator, or call our team and we’ll help you work out what applies.
